Vanilla Custard Recipe

I love to make our own custard. I find that it taste better then the ones out of the carton or out of the box.

Yes I know it can be just another added extra time in the kitchen. But I enjoy it so that is okay 🙂 Plus we also always have the ingredients around our house as well so its a save on the grocery budget by not having to buy it extra.

Also the kids and hubby both say its better then the box and carton.

So I thought I would share the recipe with you guys. Now if I don’t have a certain ingredient I will place an * next to it and write the substitute

2 cups milk (500ml)
1 Vanilla bean * (I used 2 to 4 teaspoons of Vanilla Extract)
4 egg yolks
1 tablespoon corn flour
55g caster sugar
Apple crumble to to serve with (what we used)

  1. Combine milk and vanilla extract in a saucepan and heat on medium until it simmers. Remove from the heat, cover and set aside for about 5 to 10 minutes
  2. Beat egg yolks and corn flour together until smooth, add caster sugar and beat for another 2 to 3 minutes until pale and thick.
  3. reheat the milk. Pour onto egg mixture a little at a time, whisking continuously. Return the mixture back to the saucepan. Cook on a low heat for around 8 minutes, stirring, until mixture thickens and coats the back of a spoon.
  4. If you are using vanilla beans strain through a sieve to remove the beans and pods.

Serve with your fav desert. For us that is home made apple crumble or pie and jelly 🙂

So as easy as that and I great way to get the kids included.
